Open to All the Women of Our Lady of Mercy Parish
To Jesus Through Mary
Affiliated with the Sodality Union of the Archdiocese of Washington
* Serving the Community
Through the Apostolic Committee, the Sodality supports Sophia House, a refuge for women sponsored by Interfaith Works of Montgomery County. Many months we bring to our regular meeting specific items which have been requested by the shelter.
- At Christmas we fulfill wish lists from the ladies who have moved on to half-way houses called Horizon Homes.
- For Valentine’s Day, we provide gift bags of personal items for them.
-In the spring the Sodality has a baby shower for Gabriel Project, an organization which provides homes, support and training for pregnant women.
Programs presented at the meetings often include information about community projects which provide us other opportunities to volunteer.
* Serving the Parish
The work of the Eucharistic Committee is care of the altar. Teams take turns weekly preparing the altar for the Sunday Liturgy. Sodalists also wash and iron the linens used on the altar. The wonderful decorations at Christmas and Easter are the work of the Sodality.
Through the sale of Christmas Cards, the Sodality is able to help provide altar flowers and other altar necessities for the church all year.
Our Lady’s Committee makes beautiful dalmatics, the white garments which are given to infants at their baptism.
At the end of the school year, the Sodality hosts a Mass and Luncheon for the 8th graders of Our Lady of Mercy School and their mothers. At this very popular event the students are presented with Miraculous Medals. They hear the story of these medals and Mary’s promise of loving help through their lives.
* Devotion to Mary
In the fall and again in Lent the Sodality arranges days of prayer and reflection for the entire parish. These events include interesting speakers, a mass and a luncheon.
One of the projects of the Our Lady’s Committee is making rosaries which are sent to the Missions.
All of the activities of the Sodality are opportunities to meet and work with other ladies of the parish. Our regular monthly luncheon meetings are a special time to be with friends, praying together and then socializing while enjoying delicious food.
